Bars Cheap & Cheerfull OP Bar - Rediculously cheap drinks at all times a must for drinks before the AU on Wednesday! Green monsters and cheeky Vs aplenty.
Cheshire Cat, Lloyds & Orange Grove - All situated at the heart of Fallowfield and offering cheap drinks and good studenty times throughout the year! Little more pricey, but still cheerfull! Revolution - In the heart of Fallowfield lies this easy-on-the-eye joint that attracts a good looking/pretentious crowd happy to sup and pay the inflated bar prices. With racks of flavoured vodka this place caters for vodka monsters galore. Kro Bar - Perched opposite The Manchester Student Union, Kro Bar is encased in a splendid building breathing fresh air into Manchester's student stretch and setting the standards for others to follow. Home to an excellent selection of beers and beverages, including top-quality fresh coffee, it also serves from a highly rated restaurant standard food menu. Plenty of seating outside which is - weather permitting - always packed.
The Friendship Inn - a student friendly "real pub", the beer is more expensive but a little more reliable than Lloyds, opposite. And it's a good place to watch the football, where the Dentico boys can often be seen for the big matches.
Bar XS - Located in fallowfield, where it offers one of the more expensive but good pints in the area. The real Reason to visit XS is XS Malarkey, the legendary comedy nights on a tuesday. For a meer £3 pound you get to see a ridiculously good standard of stand up! Font - Consists of two-floors, plenty of in-house entertainment (like the big-screen Playstation2) and a really friendly clientele. The scran is decent and good value-for-money. A great bar that not too many people exploit, but we do on regular occassion for our pub crawls!
Expensive Living Room - With a low-key presence on Deansgate, surrounded by mid-market Tapas Bars and a Wetherspoons, it would be easy to overlook this bar, yet anyone on the Manchester scene knows that this is the place to be, especially if you want to rub shoulders with the likes of Robinho - it is often the watering hole for Manchesters footballers. Alternative Troff - Troff is tucked away down on Landcross Road in the heart of student squalor, some good beers, a relaxed atmosphere and some hearty grub! They also have live music nights with some the best talent in Manc. Also check out the Troff Deaf, Dumb and Blind Institute, near the MMSU, which is a great venue. Big Hands - The bar opposite the Stopford with people selling flowers outside......yeah you know the one! Despite the expectancy of it being tiny, once inside you'll realise that it goes back for miles and miles, and every inch of the place has a fantastic kitsch atmosphere Situated next to Manchester Academy, it's a common place to hang out before or after a gig, where you can see a lot of the bands also hang out! A fantastic array of continental beers are just waiting to be sampled!
| Clubs Cheap & Cheerfull Robinskis - In the heart of
Fallowfield, "Robbos" is famed for its legendary Tuesday Vodbull nights. It may be small and have sweat dripping off the walls, but the mix of cheap vodka, cheesy music and loads of students out for a good time, makes you keep on coming back for more! Ps make sure you're there early enough as it will always be rammed! Queen of Hearts - Very similar to Robbos this scream bar offers the same cheap drinks in the slightly more spacious surroundings of an old church. Brilliant in the summer for drinking in the beer garden whilst playing a game of ping pong. A Friday night favorite for many a Manchester Dentist looking to unwind!
BOP - It's impossible to avoid this student night in your first year, you will end up here whether you like it or not! Some see it as a glorified school disco, some see it as a one of the best student experiences around! I myself think it is genius. Mainstream
TigerTiger - This club situated in the Printworks offers a very good student night on a Monday. A good option if you fancy a nicer venue without stepping outside the student bubble.
Birdcage - This club plays host to some interesting sites for most of the week when it is a cabaret club! But on a Wednesday it opens it's doors to Students, when it offers a popular alternative to the AU. The AU - A must for most students on a Wednesday night, you will always be offered a ticket by a fancy dressed AU member around OP. Always offering a night to remember especially if you are a member of one of the sports teams! Indie 5th Avenue - Over on Princess Street and claiming to be ‘Manchester’s number one indie experience’, is open six nights a week. From foam parties, to Xfm Manchester bashes and live music nights plus rock bottom prices, it’s easy to see why students queue round the block on a nightly basis. Both get rammed at the weekend, so either get in early and take advantage of the cheap door entry or head there later on when the queues have died down. 42nd Street - Situated on Bootle Street, "42s" is cheap, cheap, cheap five nights a week. Thursday nights offering one of the best nights around – if you can navigate you way past the sometimes inconsistent bouncers – 42s is a student-friendly haven.
Alternative
Satan's Hollow - For those of you into rock, there's (HTW) and Jillys Rockworld (HTW), both playing metal, rock, emo and hardcore. Very big nights indeed - check out the freebar at satan's on their student night. The Music Box - The flagship for Manchester's underground resistance and home to Mr Scruff. Don't expect a clean, cool interior because this place is a dirty (sometimes, filthy!) basement venue that gets hotter than a furnace at the peak of the night. If you are into your music and want to be surrounded by hundreds of like-minded people going mental rather than tiptoeing about be sure to check La Box.
Sankeys - Once the place to go, Sankeys is still a good night out and made all the better when it's the destination for a big name DJ. New venues are doing the same thing slightly better, but it is definitely worth a visit if only to say you’ve been to the legend that is Sankeys.

Places Of Interest Having sampled all of the above you will probably find the pharmacy the most interesting place as you stock up on Pepto-Bismol and Alka Selzer. Otherwise, the Arndale Centre and the ever-humungous Trafford Centre are the best places to spend your student loan. The University Museum offers some rather comfortable bean bags for a snooze on that hangover :) and some history as well! The Armitage centre offers a reasonable gym, as does the Sugden, and there are many places to play football! |
